Fresh greens
The library's latest fundraiser is now in progress. We are selling beautiful, fresh wreaths, swags, and crosses made of fir and spruce, fashioned by Draus Farms. These greens are well made and last well into the winter season, especially when displayed outside. You can call the library at 570-874-3382 for more information about items and pricing. Orders can be placed until November 24 for pick-up at the library on December 4. We can also arrange delivery if you can't make it to the library. Enjoy these traditional pieces during the Holidays and help the library as well. All proceeds go to the the library's General Fund.

Community connections
Thanks to the employees at the Frackville store of the Wells Fargo Bank, we were nominated to receive a grant of $1000 for their 2014 Community Connections Giving Program. This is an annual program where each of its retail banking stores explores the needs of their local communities and selcts a nonprofit organization or school to receive a $1000 grant. This year, Wells Fargo will award close to  $300,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations and schools throughout Pennsylavania. I attended a breakfast in Wilkes-Barre at which all of the recipients from Northeast PA received their grant. It was interesting to see the broad spectrum of organizations that were selected-food banks, libraries, cultural programs, and services to children and seniors. The library is proud to be part of this nationwide partnership and we thank Wells Fargo for their activity at the local level.

Let them eat cupcakes!
We had a great time at the first county wide Cupcake War fundraiser to support the public libraries in Schuylkill County. I entered as a baker and it was fun coming up with what I hoped was a unique idea. I put together a spice cupcake with apple pie filling and a caramel frosting. These were called 'Not Your Mother's Apple Pie Cupcakes' and a lot of the tasters said they like the combination. There were over thirty bakers in two categories of under age 18 and over 18. Some of the kid's entries were very tasty. I enjoyed an unusual Sweet Potatoe cupcake, and I absolute loved a Walnut Cupcake made by the grandson of one of our patrons. Jacqui Verhauz of Jim Thorpe entered the competition in support of Frackville. Her cleverly named Butterbeer Cupcake, a rich butterscotch flavor with scrumptious buttercream on top definitely deserved the win for Best Taste. Glad I was able to get one of those before they were gone! Think about enterering next year-it was really fun! Thanks to Claudia Gross of the Orwigsburg Public Library for all her efforts in getting this organized.

Join the Club
The library has kicked off its Annual Fund Drive and Century Club Campaign for 2011. This activity is very important in that it not only helps us to maintain our services to the community, but it also insures that we meet the standard for local effort that the State of Pennsylvania requires in order to give us State Aid to Public Libraries. As you plan the remainder of your charitable giving for the year, please consider the library.Any amount is greatly appreciated, but if you can, a donation of $100 or more qualifies the giver to be part of our Century Club. This fund is used to enhance and expand the library through building repairs, new equipment, and other special projects. We look forward to having you as a member.

Shop 'til you drop...
The library has several fund raisers planned during the next few weeks which can help you with your Holiday shopping. Candle Creations of Frackville will be supplying clean burning, aromatic soy candles for our Fall Candle Sale. They come in two sizes-10 oz and 16 oz apothecary jars, and a variety of scents.  My personal favorite is Hot Cocoa, but we also have Candy Cane, Home for the Holidays, Bayberry, Ginger Snap, and more.  Check out the samples at the library. Prices range from $12-15. Orders must be placed by November 5, and payment is due with the order. If you're looking for a larger variety of gift ideas, join us at the Bon-Ton, Schuylkill Mall for their Community Day Event on Saturday, November 13 from 6AM to closing. For just $5.00, you can purchase a coupon booklet with loads of savings opportunities. The Bon-Ton has promised fewer exclusions than ever! All proceeds from the sale of booklets will go to the library. Booklets are available at the library, or see us on the day of the event at the Bon-Ton. SEPTEMBER 8, 2010
Today's Yesterdays
Hopefully all of you baby boomers that spent your weekends at Willow Lake will recognize the title of this record album. It is an extensive collection of the best known songs of our local celebrities, the Jordan Brothers. This group of brothers, born and raised right here in Frackville, rose to fame when they were just teens, hitting the road with their rock and roll band.  Later this year, the Jordan Brothers will be honored with a memorial plaque at the Frackville Borough Building on South Center St. In celebration of the event, you can have your very own copy of Today's Yesterdays. CD's are now available for sale at the library, and the group has been kind enough to offer the library a share of the proceeds. The price of the CD, which contains 26 tracks including their famous rendition of Heart, is $25. Arrangements can also be made for the copies to be signed.

Frackville 1939
We now have copies of Frackville 1939, a DVD  of a film made in 1939 by the Frackville Rotary . These DVD's are available for sale at a price of $15.00. All proceeds go to the library's general fund. You'll love going back in time, and you might even recognize someone in your family. The film documents businesses, churches, schools, and  locations of interest.  This is a great collectible narrated by local historian Lorraine Stanton, and would make a wonderful gift for your favorite local history enthusiast. Stop at the library and have a look-we'll be showing the film on TV. Call 874-3382 for information or use our contact page.

Pet Memories

Losing a pet through illness or accident is very difficult for many of our patrons. These 'wild' creatures become like members of the family in many households, and their owners remember them fondly. We've instituted a new program at the library that allows you to honor the memory of your pet and help the library at the same time. For a $5.00 donation to the library, you can place a photo of your pet on our 'Pet Memories' wall, and let others share in remembering your lost friend. Ask any librarian for assistance.
